Copernicus/Sentinels data processing

The Australian research community has now access to the full set of observations from the new European Copernicus satellite missions, the “Sentinels”. This is possible through "Copernicus Australia”, which is a regional data hub supporting all potential users in our region.

We have taken advantage of this priviledged access to start developing tools for processing observations from the Sentinel3-OLCI and Sentinel2-MSI instruments in particular.

This capability is illustrated below with a map of the phytoplankton chlorophyll concentration around Australia, from the OLCI instrument. This map displays the average concentration for March 2017, and was obtained through processing of about 6x108 pixels using Pawsey computing resources and the Australia “Copernicus data Hub”.

This is work in progress, and improvements will certainly be incorporated as we continue working on this (also keep in mind that OLCI has not been vicariously calibrated for the moment).

This is a research tool, so the logic is certainly not to generate such products in a systematic way, but rather to provide the flexibility in order to test various algorithms in view of ending up with the "tailored" products that we generally need in complement to the standard products distributed by space agencies. The way it is designed should make it rather easy to "plug-in" any algorithm that uses reflectance in the OLCI bands.

The logic is therefore to allow research activities to develop (from small student projects to projects of a larger scope), taking advantage of this unique resource we now have access to.
